Conference with the Nobel Prize–winning economist Jean Tirole

On October 4th, join us and meet the Nobel Prize–winning economist Jean Tirole.

After having studied engineering at the Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, Jean Tirole turned his interests to economics and mathematics. In 1981 he received his doctorate in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the US. He maintained his connections to MIT, in part as a professor of economics from 1984 to 1991. Since 1992 he has worked at the School of Economics at the University of Toulouse in France.

If markets dominated by a small number of companies are left unregulated, society often suffers negative consequences. Prices can become unjustifiably high and new companies can be prevented from entering the market. Since the mid-1980s, Jean Tirole has worked to develop a coherent theory, for example showing that regulation should be adapted to suit specific conditions in each industry. Based on game theory and other theories, he has also suggested a framework for designing regulations and has applied it to a number of industries, from banking to telecommunications.

J. Tirole was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2014 for his analysis of market power and the regulation of natural monopolies.

When Jean Tirole won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Economics, he suddenly found himself being stopped in the street by complete strangers and asked to comment on issues of the day, no matter how distant from his own areas of research. His transformation from academic economist to public intellectual prompted him to reflect further on the role economists and their discipline play in society. The result is his last book “Economics for the Common Good”, a passionate manifesto for a world in which economics, far from being a "dismal science," is a positive force for the common good. Providing a rich account of how economics can benefit everyone, Economics for the Common Good sets a new agenda for the role of economics in society.

Join us on October 4th at the French Embassy where Jean Tirol will introduce his book Economics for the Common Good.

The conference will be followed by a cocktail where you will be able to taste a glass of wine from our sponsor Les Grands Chais de France. During the cocktail, a signing session will be organized. Warning, the number of guests is limited; you will receive a confirmation email a few days after your registration.
