Rule of law: Community is our strongest card.
In many ways, 2025 proved to be a challenging year for the world, for the EU, for France and for Denmark. And already in this first month of 2026, we see the pressure on our communities increasing. In Denmark. In France. In the EU. And globally.
As a lawyer, I am accustomed to the fact that rules and regulations are something to be discussed, interpreted and challenged. But they are always something we relate to. And with the separation of powers, we can be confident that each branch ensures the others are kept in check. By challenging. By enforcing. By legislating. And although the three branches are separate, they are still fundamentally based on a shared set of values — one in which it is not the will of the strongest that should prevail, but what is deemed best for the community.
The rule of law is what lawyers in the free world base their advice on — an expectation that we can rely on the law and that its interpretation is trustworthy. Yet increasingly, these legal principles are being challenged in parts of the world where we had not previously imagined this to be possible. We have seen the International Bar Association, the European Bar Association and the American Bar Association issue letters of concern to the US administration regarding the deterioration of the rule of law, legal certainty and the independence of the judiciary.
That is why organisations that allow us to strengthen our sense of community are so crucial in 2026. Organisations such as the Danish-French Chamber of Commerce, where we have the opportunity to meet and jointly acknowledge and demystify our differences and similarities, thereby creating new relationships and mutual understanding — which ultimately form the very foundation of community.
Community is what makes us strong. What challenges us. What requires us to dare — to think, to reach out, to help, to learn, and to stand together. It commits us all to actively strengthen the communities that protect the rule of law — locally, across Europe, and globally. Community is our strongest card in the fight for progress and prosperity.
